West Kennet Long Barrow
Wiltshire
The best example of a Chambered Long Barrow is at West Kennet near Avebury
in Wiltshire. The West Kennet Long Barrow consists of an earth bank approximately 100
metres (330 feet) in length. The barrow tapers from a wide eastern end to a narrow western
end and is flanked by two ditches. The tomb at West Kennet was found to have five burial
chambers containing the remains of 50 people. These people were buried over a period of
400 years or so from about 3400 BCE.
